CAT - Common
Admission Test

The
CAT is primarily a pre-requisite to qualify for
the IIMs, however in recent years, for the
benefit of students, many other institutes in the
country also accept the CATas their qualifying
test. It is one of the toughest exams in the
world.
CAT tests you on two subjects English and Maths.
These subjects are further subdivided into areas,
viz Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Data
Sufficiency, Logical Reasoning, ReadingComprehension,
Verbal Reasoning and Verbal Ability. The areas
are clearly demarcated into sections. The number
of sections and their composition varies from
year to year. Therefore the pattern of the CATis
not certain.
The CAT is held once every year, on the second
Sundayin December. To be eligible to take the CATa
student should either be in his last year of graduation,
be a graduateor post-graduatein any discipline
What do they judge?
The purpose of CAT is to find out whether you
have the necessary aptitude to undergo the
courses you wish to study. The CAT is designed to
measure your abilities and skills required to
undergo training in IIMssuccessfully. These test
also find out your general scholastic ability

ELIGIBILITY
The CAT has no
eligibility criteria of its own. You must
take the CATdepending on the eligibility
as required by the Institute of your
choice.
Most of the Institutes have the following
criteria.
1. A Bachelor's
degree recognized by the Association
of Indian Universities/AICTE
2. A minimum of 50% marks in SSC or
Higher Secondary.
3. Candidates appearing at the final
bachelor's degree or equivalent
degree examinations are also eligible
to apply.

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS:
Is there any
fixed structure for CAT?
No there is no fixed structure of CAT.
The test can be in various combinations
like 4 sections(each timed for 30 mins or
non-timed), 2 or 3 sections again timed
ornon-timed etc.
But the questions are based largely on
the four areas, Problem solving, Data
Interpretation, Reading Comprehension and
Verbal ability.
What is the
minimum score required to clear the CAT?
There is nothing like minimum score, the
score cutoff varies for every year as it
is relative scoring.
Do we have to
clear every section separately?
Yes, You have to clear each section and
do well in all the areas that are being
tested.
What is the
minimum cut-off for each section?
Again the cutoff for each section varies
for every year and the minimum cut-off is
not known. But generally a thumb rule
followed for clearing cut-off is attempt
70%questions with 80% of accuracy.
Is the cut-off
same for each section?
The cutoff for each section also varies
within a test and is not fixed.
What are the
other institutes, which accept CAT scores
I don't get into IIMs?
There are various institutes which accept
CAT score as there pre requisite criteria
for admissions.
Some of the institutes are good and well
recognized.
